Day One Results (Friday)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (SMU) – Freshmen sprinters
Alexis Center and
Chelsea Francis both advanced to the semifinals of the 60-meter dash to lead the Mustangs on day one of the Cherry & Silver Invitational.
Center finished second in her heat in a time of 7.56 seconds (7.58 altitude adjusted), which is the fourth-fastest time in SMU history. Francis also put her name in the record books with a time of 7.63 seconds (7.65 altitude adjusted) and is now fifth in program history. In the 200-meter dash, Center placed 11th in a time of 24.81 (24.88 altitude adjusted), while Francis finished 31st with a time of 25.81 (25.88 altitude adjusted).
In addition to Center and Francis, classmates
Hannah Miller and
Charlotte-Tara Murphy finished fourth (10:01.95; 9:47.12 altitude adjusted) and fifth (10:04.07; 9:49.19 altitude adjusted), respectively, in the 3,000-meters in their first indoor collegiate race. Also competing in the 3K was newcomer
Marlene Gomez-Islinger, who placed ninth (10:18.61; 10:03.37 altitude adjusted), while seniors
Holly Archer and
Shanoah Souza finished 12th (10:25.07; 10:09.67 altitude adjusted) and 15th
(10:35.10; 10:19.46 altitude adjusted), respectively.
In the field events, senior
Tochi Nlemchi set a personal-best in the weight throw with a toss of 53 feet, 11 inches (16.43m) to place eighth overall. Sophomore
Daniella Murchison also turned in a personal-best with a heave of 51 feet, 2.75 inches (15.61m) to shatter her previous record by almost 10 feet.
The Mustangs return to the Albuquerque Convention Center Saturday for the second day of the Cherry & Silver Invite. The meet resumes at 11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT with the women's shot put, while action on the track begins at 11;45 a.m. CT/10:45 a.m. MT with the semifinals of the men's 60 hurdles.
