NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - The Mustangs mounted a second-half comeback on Friday night against No. 21 Oklahoma but came up short, falling 87-75.
After trailing by as many as 16 points just before halftime, SMU (1-2) cut the Sooner lead down to just three points at the midway point of the fourth quarter. However, the Mustangs were unable to finish the job. Oklahoma (2-1) used a 7-0 run to extend back out its lead and hold on for the win. Â
SMU's defense was able to hold Oklahoma to just 41 percent shooting from the field and easily its lowest point total of the season. The Sooners entered the game averaging more than 100 points per game. The main difference in the game was that the Sooners were able to drop in 13 shots from behind the arc, compared to SMU's six.
Senior
McKenzie Adams was the workhorse for the Mustangs on offense, leading the way with 25 points. McKenzie has now reached double figures in eight of her last nine games, dating back to last season, and has scored at least 20 in three of the last seven games.
Freshman
Ariana Whitfield posted her first-career double-digit scoring performance, providing 13 points. Senior
Kiara Perry followed up her career-day against TCU with another solid performance, also finishing with 13 points.
Johnasia Cash, also a freshman, gave the Mustangs a productive 10 points and six rebounds in only 12 minutes of play.
This was the first game this season four players scored in double-digits for SMU. Through the first two games, only Adams and Perry had reached that mark in a game. The 75 points scored tonight is also a season-high.
Junior
Dai'ja Thomas was her typically self in the post, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior
Mikayla Reese dished out six assists to lead the Mustangs in that category. Â
SMU is away from home again on Sunday, traveling to UT Arlington for a 2 p.m. tip.
