ARLINGTON, Texas (SMU) – Despite the Mustangs leading for nearly 31 minutes of game time, UT Arlington (4-0) closed the game on a 6-0 run to edge SMU (1-3) on Sunday, 58-55. The Mavericks hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining to claim the win while the Mustangs were unable to get the shot to go as time expired.
For the first time in her Mustang career, freshman
Ariana Whitfield led SMU in scoring by tying her career-high with 13 points. Senior
Stephanie Collins broke into double-figures for the first time this season, scoring 10. Senior
Kiara Perry scored 10+ for the third-straight game, finishing with 11 while dealing with some foul trouble.
Junior
Dai'ja Thomas was a force down low again for the Mustangs, hurting UT Arlington by grabbing 13 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end. Throughout the contest, SMU controlled the board. The Mustangs finished with 23 more total rebounds, as well as 16 more offensive rebounds than the Mavericks.
SMU, while leading for the majority of the game, could never put much separation between itself and UT Arlington. The largest lead of the game was seven points, and that was in the first quarter. A big reason for that was the Mavericks' hot shooting from behind the arc. UT Arlington hit 7-of-14 from 3, while SMU finished 2-for-12.
SMU returns home on Tuesday to face Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. before heading west to compete in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nevada on November 24 and 26.
