RENO, Nev. (SMU) - After a tightly contested first half, Nevada used a 28-point third quarter to pull away from SMU (3-4) on its way to a 80-72 victory in the championship game of the Nugget Classic on Sunday.
Senior McKenzie Adams was fantastic for the Mustangs in the title game, leading the team in points, rebounds and assists. The Frisco, Texas, native put together her most efficient shooting night of the season, scoring 35 points on 12-for-20 shooting. The senior was also flawless from the free-throw line, hitting all nine attempts. Adams was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament team after her two strong outings in Nevada.
The performance marked Adams' second 30-point game of the season. Adams in closing in on joining the 1,000 point club at SMU, needing just 11 more points to reach that milestone.
Turnovers played a huge role in the outcome, as the Mustangs turned the ball over 19 times in the game that led to 26 Wolfpack points. That's compared to just nine turnovers for the Wolfpack. Offensive rebounds also hurt SMU, as Nevada finished the game with 23 second-chance points.
Three teammates reached eight points, but Adams was the only Mustang to finish the game in double-digits. The Mustangs eclipsed 70 in both games of the Nugget Classic after reaching 70 just once in the first five games of the season.
The Mustangs are on the road again on Wednesday, visiting North Texas at 11:30 a.m.
