LAST GAME (W, 79-39 vs USF on Dec. 31): SMUMustangs.com: DALLAS (SMU) - On a night when the SMU offense wasn't clicking on all cylinders early on, the Mustang defense was tremendous for all 40 minutes. Using that stifling defense and a second-half offensive surge, SMU dominated USF on Sunday night on its way to a 79-39 New Year's Eve victory. In the second half, SMU's offense sprang to life by hitting its first eight attempts to blow the game open with an 26-1 run through the first eight minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the defense only upped its already strong first half effort. USF's first basket of the half didn't come until the 11:48 mark. Junior
Shake Milton led the way offensively for the Mustangs, dropping in 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Fellow juniors
Jahmal McMurray and
Jarrey Foster joined Milton in double-figures, each scoring 12 points. Sophomore
Jimmy Whitt rounded out the double-digit scorers, finishing with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Mustangs scored more points in the second half alone (51) than the Bulls managed for the entire game. SMU held USF to just 28 percent from the field, including a 3-of-19 mark from 3-point range. The Bulls finished with more turnovers (21) than field goals (14). SMU contested essentially every shot the Bulls put up, leading to the low field goal percentage. USF scored zero points in transition, compared to SMU's 14 fast-break points. The Mustangs also dominated the Bulls on the glass, finishing with a plus-16 rebounding margin. The Mustangs dominated the game in essentially every statistically category in the 40-point win. SMU finished with a better shooting percentage from the field and the free-throw line, fewer turnovers, more rebounds, more blocks, more steals and more assists. While SMU never trailed, USF locked up the score at 11 with just under seven minutes left in the first half. A 43-6 run was the Mustangs' response.

UP NEXT: SMU is at [19/20] Cincinnati on Sunday (6pm ET/5CT, ESPN2) before hosting Temple Wednesday.

THE SERIES VS. TULANE (20-13): SMU and Tulane meet for the 34th time, with SMU holding a 20-13 series lead. The Mustangs have won five straight meetings, following a 2016-17 season series sweep. SMU opened the season with an 80-64 win at Tulane on Jan. 15, before edging the Green Wave, 80-75, at Moody Coliseum on Feb. 15. In 2015-16, SMU swept the series, winning 60-45 at Tulane on Jan. 17, before a 74-53 victory at Moody on Feb. 28. SMU is 14-2 at home, and has not lost in Moody Coliseum to Tulane since Dec. 7, 1991. SMU is now 6-11 all-time at Tulane, including three straight victories. The first meeting between the programs came on Dec. 18, 1959, an 86-61 victory for SMU.
Â
LAST MEETING VS. TULANE (W, 80-64 at Devlin Fieldhouse on Jan. 15, 2017): DALLAS (AP) - Now that people are starting to pay attention to No. 19 SMU, maybe they will understand why coach
Tim Jankovich keeps talking about these short-handed Mustangs being such a special group. They just keep finding ways to win games.
Semi Ojeleye scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, including consecutive 3-pointers in a run that finally put SMU ahead to stay in an 80-75 victory over Tulane, which led by 15 points at halftime. Three days after a comeback win over then-No. 11 Cincinnati to take over the American Athletic Conference lead, and avenging their only loss since November, the Mustangs had to rally against one of the teams at the bottom of the league standings. The Mustangs have won nine in a row, and 19 of their last 20. But while they have lost only once since November, this is only their second week this season in the AP poll.
Jarrey Foster had 19 points, including three consecutive dunks in one stretch for SMU.
Shake Milton and
Sterling Brown each had 13 points. Cameron Reynolds had 23 points for Tulane which has a nine-game losing streak. Ojeleye missed his first 10 shots before making a 3-pointer less than 2 minutes into the second half. Even though he finished 4-of-17 shooting overall, he scored the first eight points in the 13-0 run that put SMU ahead to stay. The Mustangs were within 56-55 after Ojeleye's consecutive 3s, and went ahead for the first time when Brown had a steal and a breakaway layup with 9:43 left. Reynolds missed a dunk that would have put Tulane back ahead with 7 minutes left, and Foster followed that with a powerful two-handed dunk. Then came a one-handed slam over a Tulane defender before a putback slam for Foster.
Â
ROAD WARRIORS: The Mustangs are 24-12 on the road since the start of the 2014-15 season with a 33-17 mark away from Moody Coliseum (9-5 neutral site). The nine road wins rank second in school history (10 in 1955-56). The Mustangs won seven straight road games, which was the longest streak since a program-record eight in 1955-56.
