MEMPHIS, Tenn. - SMU and Memphis were locked in a tight one for the first 20 minutes. In the second half, it was all Mustangs. SMU dominated the second half on Saturday afternoon to capture the road conference win and close out the Tigers convincingly, 53-35.
The Mustangs held Memphis to just 12 points in the second half, outscoring the Tigers by 15 points over the final 20 minutes. SMU scored more points in the third quarter (17), than Memphis managed for the entire half. The Tigers hit only five shots in the second half (5-for-21, 24 percent).Â
SMU was very balanced on offense and found production from a number of different players with three finishing with double-figure point totals. Freshman Ariana Whitfield and senior Kiara Perry led the way with 11 while senior McKenzie Adams provided 10 more points. Despite the low-scoring final score, six Mustangs reached at least five points.Â
Memphis had essentially no success breaking down the Mustangs' defense. The Tigers shot just 30 percent from the floor while accumulating six more turnovers than field goals. SMU turned those 20 turnovers by into 21 points. Six Mustangs registered at least one steal, while Perry led the way with three takeaways.Â
SMU also found success on the boards, finishing with nine more rebounds to once again win the rebounding battle. Adams matched her season-high with seven rebounds to lead the Mustangs. SMU has now outrebounded its opponent in 18 of the 25 games this year.Â
The margin of victory was SMU's third-largest of the season. The Mustangs have now won three of the last four contests and two in-a-row.
SMU faces another road test on Wednesday, February 14, traveling to No. 25 USF for a 6 p.m. tip.Â
