How To Identify - SMU Athletics Mental Health

What is anxiety?
Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Fast heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, and feeling tired may occur.


Types of Anxiety

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Performance Anxiety
  • Panic Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Phobias
 

Symptoms

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • Having difficulty controlling worry
  • Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
 

How to reduce it:

  • Behavioral therapy
  • Exercise
  • Deep breathing
  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Reading
  • Socializing, following pandemic guidelines of social distancing, masking and hand hygiene)
  • Speaking with your health care provider
  • Spirituality
  • Thought reframing
