ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at 22nd-ranked UCF on Friday night in Orlando, Florida. In their second conference match of the season, the Mustangs could not overcome an early deficit and fell to the Knights, the reigning conference champions.
"We got beat by a good team," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "I don't know if we competed hard enough to give ourselves a chance, but they were a talented team."
SMU (5-7-0, 1-1-0 AAC) and the Knights were scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game, as strong defense from the Mustang back four thwarted a flurry of chances for UCF.
In the 18th minute, the Mustangs had an opportunity to go ahead when freshman Lauren Guerra slipped a through ball to sophomore Kelsey Gorney. However, UCF goalkeeper Connie Organ was able to come off of her line and snag the loose ball before Gorney could get a foot on it.
UCF (10-2-0, 3-0-0 AAC) then went ahead in the 22nd minute when Megan Fish found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Knights pushed their lead to 2-0 just four minutes later when Ashley Spivey capitalized on a cross from Tatiana Coleman. UCF would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Bridget Callahan would tally another goal for the Knights to make the score, 3-0.
Senior goalkeeper Lauryn Bodden, making her first start of the season after missing the first 11 games due to injury, recorded five saves.
"I thought Lauryn played very well when she needed to," said Petrucelli. "For her first game back, I thought she did great."
Gorney and Guerra led the team with a shot on goal apiece and redshirt freshman Madison Reisdorf made her first career appearance for the Mustangs, playing eight minutes off the bench.
"We got beat by a good team tonight," said Petrucelli. "But, we need to bounce back."
The Mustangs have a quick turnaround as they head to Tampa, Florida, for Sunday showdown with USF. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET.
