DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Texas Southern on Friday night at Westcott Field. Junior Lissi Lonsberry earned the shutout in net and freshman Vanessa Valadez scored the Mustangs' lone goal. The goal was Valadez' first of her career.
SMU (1-2-0, 0-0-0 AAC) went ahead in the sixth minute as Valadez made a nice cut inside the box to beat a defender and then put her shot in the lower left corner to put the Mustangs up, 1-0.
Texas Southern (0-3-0, 0-0-0 SWAC) held strong in the back after giving up the early goal, despite a relentless Mustang attack. SMU tallied 15 shots and four corner kicks in the opening half. Lonsberry, making her first career start in net, was forced to make only one save in the half.
In the second half, the Mustangs continued to put pressure on the Lady Tigers' defense. The best chance for the Mustangs in the second half came in the 61st minute, when freshman Chinelo Odobulu made a blazing run down the sideline and crossed a ball into Valadez, but her shot was saved by Texas Southern keeper Liliana Hernandez.
The Lady Tigers had a scoring opportunity in the 64th minute, but freshman midfielder Claire Oates made a sliding save on the goal line to keep the Mustangs ahead.
Valadez led SMU in shots with seven, including four on goal. Freshman forward Lauren Guerra tallied four shots, while senior Rikki Clarke and Oates had three shots apiece. Lonsberry earned the shutout in net with two saves.
"We had a number of chances," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "It's early in the year and we played a lot of freshman, but none of that changes the fact that we should have scored more."
SMU returns to the pitch on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT against Missouri at Westcott Field.
