DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis' most recent addition to its coaching staff brings a deepened Texas pedigree to the Hilltop tennis scene.
Ahead of the open of the 2021 spring season, Greg Diamond will join head coach
Jeff Nevolo's staff as volunteer assistant coach for the Mustangs.
A native Texan and graduate of Baylor University, Diamond competed for the Bears, where he earned his business degree in 1996. In 2018, Diamond returned to the sport, where he was hired on at the Lakes Tennis Academy in Frisco, Texas. Under the guidance of Dave Licker and Lakes owner Nick Johnson, Diamond has been instrumental in developing young players at all levels of the sport, spanning from the youth level to prospective collegiate recruits. Greg and his wife Heather's daughter, Abigail, is also a staple on the Lakes Tennis Academy courts.
Before his coaching career began, Diamond was a standout state and nationally ranked junior who honed his skills in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Coupled with his passion for coaching which began in the early 1990's and continued throughout his summers at Baylor, he has gained an intimate knowledge of what today's college player will experience throughout their career.
"Greg has been a great addition to our program since he began with us in August," Nevolo said. "He has years of tennis coaching experience and understands the sport and player development at a high level.
"On a day-to-day basis Greg brings enthusiasm and positivity that is unwavering. Our staff and student-athletes will continue to benefit from Greg's presence as we take on a challenging spring schedule."
The Mustangs open their 2021 spring season with a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Stysligner/Altec Tennis Complex, hosting Abilene Christian and UTSA at 11 a.m., and 3 p.m., respectively. Admission to both matches will be free to the public, and further match details can be located at smumustangs.com.
