COLUMBIA, S.C. (SMU) — SMU's Taylor Johnson took down Virginia Tech's No. 39 Ozlem Uslu during the first day of singles play at the Gamecock Shootout. The Mustangs notched a total of 15 wins over the weekend.
Representing the Mustangs at the Carolina Tennis Center were Drew Morris, Caroline McGinley, Lana Mavor, Maja Makoric, Millie Skelton and Johnson.
Aside from Johnson's win, day one also saw two wins in doubles play, with Johnson and Mavor defeating Marshall's first pair (6-4 )and Morris and Skelton defeating the Bisons second pair (6-1). In the rest of the first day's singles matchups, Mavor and McGinley also won their matches against their opponents from Virginia Tech.
McGinley went on to defeat Marshall's Aisling McGrane on day two (6-4, 6-3) as well as winning her doubles match with Makoric against Wilkins and Suchankova from Charlotte 6-1.
The rest of day two featured four other wins for SMU, including victories in singles play from Morris, Mavor and Makoric. Johnson and Mavor also posted a 6-1 win against South Carolina's Sarah Hamner and Olympe Lancelot in the Mustangs' first doubles match of the day.
The Mustangs closed out their competition at the Gamecock Shootout with two singles wins and two doubles wins — with Johnson and Makoric defeating South Carolina's Elise Mills (6-4, 6-3) and Charlotte's Sara Suchankova (7-5, 6-7(4), 1-0(3)), respectively.
Skelton and Morris paired together to defeat Virginia Tech's Charlotte Cartledge and Michaela Hegarty 6-2 in the Mustangs' final match of the Gamecock Shootout. Earlier in day three, McGinley and Makoric also posted a 6-2 win over Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng from Virginia Tech
SMU continues its fall slate by traveling to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational this coming weekend.
