Milwaukee, Wis. (SMU) — Drew Morris and Taylor Johnson will head to Milwaukee to represent SMU women's tennis in the 47th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic beginning on Friday.
Returners Morris and Johnson enter the Mustangs' first fall event after an eventful previous season. Most recently, Johnson spent the summer representing Team USA at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China.
"Last year was such a transformative year for me as a player and I feel like I was able to develop a strong foundation of my tennis and my confidence," Johnson said. "This year is going to be all about staying in the process, continuing to build my base everyday and giving it my all to take my game to the next level."
Morris is coming off of being placed on the All-AAC Team and two AAC Player of the Week accolades in 2023.
"I am super excited to get the chance to play in the Milwaukee Classic," Morris said. "It's pretty cool to have been selected and it will be some really good competition from some other great schools. I'm looking forward to playing doubles with Taylor."
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic will consist of 32 player singles and 16 team doubles draws.
Competition in both fields will begin on Friday with a 32 draw in singles and 16 draw in doubles. Morris and Johnson will be competing in both.Â
Both return after a season when the Mustangs defeated six ranked teams and won The American Championship.
The first two days of events will take place at the Milwaukee Country Club. Finals will conclude on Sunday at the Western Racquet Club.
The winner of the event receives a wild card into the fall national tournament. Other schools competing include UNC, Stanford, Notre Dame, Virginia, USC (Southern Cal), GCU, Maryland, Navy, Oklahoma, and Brown.
