NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Walter Camp Football Foundation/SMU) – SMU defensive end Ahmaad Moses has earned a spot on the Walter Camp Player of the Year Semifinalist watch list, the foundation announced in a release on Wednesday.
Out of 20 semifinalists, Moses is one of six defensive players to make the cut. The rest of the list consists of 11 quarterbacks, two running backs and one wide receiver. The defensive end is one of only three ACC players to claim a spot on the list, joining Rueben Bain, Jr. from Miami and Haynes King from Georgia Tech.
Moses has been a key component of the SMU defense. With team-leading marks of five interceptions and two fumble recoveries from the senior, SMU leads the nation in turnovers gained (26). Individually, Moses is tied for first in the ACC and FBS in total interceptions and tied for fourth nationally in fumble recoveries.
This season, the Texas native has been named a two-time ACC Defensive Back of the Week (Sept. 2, Nov. 3), a Senior Bowl Stock Up Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 3), the Paycom Jim Thrope Award Defensive Back of the Week (Nov. 3), an East-West Shrine Bowl Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 3) and a Walter Camp Award National Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 4).
Most of these accolades came after his explosive performance against then-ranked No. 10 Miami. In the conference victory, the senior registered a career-high 15 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss. Moses caught two interceptions, making it his second career game with multiple interceptions. Both of his interceptions led to touchdowns for the Mustangs in the following drive, including the takeaway in overtime to stop the Hurricanes' drive.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year will be voted on by the 136 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors later this month. Three finalists will be announced later this month and the 59th recipient of the Walter Camp Player of the Year award along with the 136th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team will be announced on the ESPN College Football Awards Show on Friday, December 12
