FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) – Led by Junior thrower
Daniella Murchison's first place finish in shot put and second place finish in the weight throw, the SMU track and field team opened the indoor season on Friday at the Arkansas Invitational.
Murchison's mark of 13.60m sealed her shot put victory and provided her first collegiate event win. She went on to record a 15.14m toss in the weight throw to finish second.
Freshmen
Cassie Ackemann and
Atipa Mabonga stood out in their field events. Ackemann cleared 1.70m in the high jump to place second, while Mabonga's 12.42m mark in triple jump also earned her a second place finish.
On the track, junior
Madison Pyle and freshman
Ashton Woods each set indoor personal records in the 600m run. Pyle finished fourth with a time of 1:34.28, followed by Woods in ninth with a time of 1:40.94.
Three Mustangs finished in the top ten in the 60m dash. Sophomores
Chelsea Francis,
Latessa Johnson and
Alexis Center placed second (7.44), seventh (7.53) and eighth (7.55), respectively. Center went on to place third in the 200m dash with a time of 24.25. Francis placed sixth with a time of 24.28.
Sophomore
Hannah Miller and freshman
Tess Misgen earned third place (2:51.59) and fifth place (2:54.71) finishes in the 1000m run, while junior
Svenja Ojstersek placed fifth out of 46 in the one mile run.
The Mustangs return to action Friday at the Texas Tech Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas and at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.
