Mustangs Claim Three Top Finishes at Houston Invitational

SMU takes first in distance medley, 60m dash and 3000m

HOUSTON (SMU) –
The SMU track and field team impressed at the Houston Invitational this weekend, claiming top finishes in three events and setting a handful of personal records.

SMU's distance medley, comprised of sophomores Hannah Miller and Charlotte-Tara Murphy and freshmen Tess Misgen and Ashton Woods, earned the team's first event victory of the weekend, finishing with a time of 11:57.50.

The distance runners continued their successes Saturday in the one mile run and the 3000m. The Mustangs claimed five top-25 finishes in the mile, led by Miller in second place (4:54.47), junior Svenja Ojstersek in third (4:58.51) and junior Anneke Grogan in ninth with a PR (5:10.40).

 SMU swept the top four finishes in the 3000m finals, finishing with six runners in the top ten. Ojstersek took first with a time of 9:54.48, followed by Murphy in second (9:54.98), Misgen in third (10:05.12) and Grogan in fourth (10:10.98). Sophomore Alison Esparza took sixth with a time of 10:28.40 while freshman Julie Jungblut finished tenth at 10:43.85.

Chelsea Francis stayed ahead of the pack in the prelims, semifinals and final rounds of the 60m dash. The sophomore ran a 7.39 in both the prelim and semifinals and improved to 7.34 in the finals to win the event. Junior Latessa Johnson finished fifth in the event with a time of 7.54.

Junior Madison Pyle added a third-place finish and a PR of her own in the 800m (2:18.46).

The runners combined to bring the Mustangs a second-place finish in the 4x400. Pyle, Johnson, Francis and Misgen finished recorded a 3:56.32 finish.

Anna Novosadova, SMU's lone multi-event athlete at the meet, had a career day in the pentathlon. The senior notched personal bests in the 60m hurdles (8.83), high jump (1.56m) and long jump (5.53m). She earned marks of 2:29.53 in the 800m and 7.10m in the shot put to finish third in the combined event.

Esparza and junior Robin Montemayor also earned personal bests, finishing second (17:26.34) and seventh (18:56.45) in the 8000m, respectively.

SMU takes a break next weekend but returns to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Music City Challenge and Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Tyson Invitational Feb. 9-10.
