Cavan Named to Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame

The SMU football team began workouts Monday in preparation for Saturday's homecoming game against Nevada. The game gets underway at Gerald J. Ford Stadium Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Mustangs had a spirited workout in pads and shorts, as they attempt to win their first Western Athletic Conference game of the year. Saturday's contest will mark the first ever meeting between SMU and Nevada.

In a related story, SMU head coach Mike Cavan was announced Monday as a 2000 inductee to the AT&T Wireless Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on October 27th at noon outside ALLTEL Stadium preceding the Florida-Georgia game. As a player at Georgia, Cavan accumulated more than 3,400 yards of total offense as the Bulldogs' quarterback from 1968-70. Cavan was named the Southeastern Conference Rookie of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to the SEC championship, an undefeated regular season (8-0-2) and a No. 8 national ranking in 1968. He still ranks among the school's top 10 career leaders in pass attempts (7th, 448), completions (7th, 229), passing yards (7th, 3,216) and passing touchdowns (8th, 20). In a 1968 game played in the worst conditions media members and coaches could recall, Georgia virtually annihilated the Florida Gators in their annual clash in the Gatorbowl. In the pouring rain, the Bulldog signal caller had a phenomenal passing day, amassing 481 offensive yards while going on to win SEC sophomore of the Year.

Joining Cavan in the 2000 inductee class is fellow Georgia quarterback John Rauch, Florida fullback Joe Brodsky, and Florida gurad Howell Boney.
