SMU senior football players Rodnick Phillips and Tracy Hart have signed NFL contracts for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
Phillips, a 6-0 running back from Galveston, Texas, agreed to a two-year deal as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks five minutes after the draft ended on Sunday. He also had talks with Jacksonville and New England, but chose the Seahawks because they "showed a lot of interest in me and provided the best situation for me to make the team," Phillips said.
"Everyone wants to be a draft prospect and get drafted," Phillips said. "Signing so fast, it was obvious I was getting good looks from some teams. Although I wanted to get drafted, I am on a team and not everybody can say that. I'm just happy to be on the team - happy, but not satisfied. A lot of people never thought I could get this far."
Phillips reports to Seahawks mini-camp on April 28.
Hart, a 5-11 cornerback from Crandall, Texas, signed a two-year free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers today.
"San Francisco is a first class organization that has a winning tradition," said Hart, who reports to mini camp on April 27. "I have a lot of work to do, but this is the best fit for me because they currently have a need for defensive backs and cover corners. I feel good, but there is still a lot of work to be done."
