The No. 11 SMU women's swimming & diving team is in first place after day one at the WAC Swimming & Diving Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
The Mustangs had four swimmers set NCAA automatic qualifying times. The Mustangs also established a sizable lead in the team competition, leading second place Hawaii, 307-167.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Mustangs' Georgina Lee set a new WAC meet, conference record and pool record, as well as automatically qualifying for the NCAAs to lead all swimmers with a time of 4:43.89. Mustang Anu Koivisto edged out teammate Alenka Kejzar for the 200 individual medley relay crown, as both automatically qualified with times of 1:59.92 and 1:59.59, respectively. Senior Katina Maistrellis successfully defended her WAC title in the 50 free (22.72). Swimming lead-off in the 200-free relay, Maistrellis split of 22.62 was a pool record and automatic qualifying time.
The SMU 400 medley relay consisting of Koivisto, Sarah Chandler, Lee and Maistrellis brought home the crown in a time of 3:39.60, narrowly missing the automatic cut.
In diving competition, SMU's Lindsay Long defended her crown in 1-meter diving, posting a score of 397.50 points.
Rounding out the scoring is Rice (166), Nevada (131), Fresno State (99), TCU (99), San Jose State (85).
Competition resumes tomorrow with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving and 800 freestyle relay. Swimming prelims begin at 11:00 a.m., diving prelims are at 1:00 p.m. and finals are at 6:30 p.m.
