Jones Added to SMU Football Staff

DALLAS, TEXAS -- Southern Methodist University head football coach Mike Cavan announced today the addition of Phil Jones to the Mustang coaching staff. Jones, who spent the previous four seasons as an assistant on the University of Georgia football staff, will coach tight ends, offensive tackles and special teams at SMU.

"I have known Phil for just about all my life and we couldn't have found a person to join the staff that has the loyalty and integrity that he has," said Cavan. "We grew up together and I have always wanted to work with him. He has been around the game his entire life and will be a great addition to our coaching staff."

The Thomaston, Ga. native was a member of Jim Donnan's staff at Georgia from 1997-2000. He coached wide receivers, defensive ends and special teams for the Bulldogs as they went 35-13 during his tenure and won four bowl games.

Prior to his stint at Georgia, Jones was the head coach at four Georgia high schools for 25 years. He compiled a 160-95-5 career record and was named the state's Class 3A Coach of the Year in 1993. He also was an assistant coach for the Georgia team in the Florida-Georgia High School All-Star Game in 1987 and 1990.

Jones fills the spot on the SMU staff that became vacant when Troy Douglas took a job at Michigan State. With Jones' addition, Cavan has also restructured his staff's responsibilities. Former tight ends coach Randy Williams will now coach running backs while Daniel Baker will focus on the interior offensive line. Pat Henderson, who coached defensive tackles a year ago, will now coach the secondary with Oscar Giles, the defensive ends coach last season, now tutoring the entire defensive line.
