The No. 9 SMU women's swimming & diving team is in Austin, Texas preparing for the 2002 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships being held at Jamail Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas. The event begins Thursday, March 21 and will run through Saturday, March 23. The event will be broadcasted on national television, tape-delayed, on ESPN2 Thursday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m. The event will be re-aired Tuesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.
The Mustangs have 30 entries in the this year's championships, in 18 different events with ten different student-athletes making the trip south on I-35 for this year's national title competition.
Leading the charge for the Ponies will be the sophomore trio of Alenka Kejzar, Anu Koivisto, and Georgina Lee. All three are WAC Champions, and each holds top three times in the nation in atleast one event. Joining the sophomore trio will be 2002 WAC Freshman of the Year Flavia Rigamonti, who is the favorite to capture the title in Saturday's 1,650 Free event. Rigamonti shattered the school and conference record in the 1,650 at the WAC Championships, touching in with a time of 15:45.93. The time was the best time this year in that event by over 20 seconds and was just six seconds shy of Janet Evans' NCAA record she set at Stanford.
