DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team defeated UTEP 3-1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-19, 30-26) on Sunday at Moody Coliseum for its fifth consecutive win against the Miners. SMU (8-11, 4-3 C-USA) hit .314 for the match, improving to 11-4 in the all-time series. Rachel Giubilato led four Mustangs with double digit kills, tallying 20 and adding 14 digs for her 14th double-double on the year.
Caitlin Rainbird notched the other SMU double-double, totaling 17 kills and 12 digs. Natalie Peters and Ashley Zener each registered 15 kills in the win with Zener hitting .583 for the contest and Peters hitting .375. Stefanie Kons led SMU with 55 assists, setting a new career-high and added three service aces. Jennette Evanco played a solid back row, totaling a team-high 24 digs to go along with three service aces.
The teams split games one and two, both by scores of 30-24. The Mustangs dominated the third frame, hitting .370 with 15 kills, en route to the 30-19 victory. UTEP came out strong in game No. 4 but could not force a deciding game five. The Mustangs battled back to tie the game at 26 and then served out the match for the victory.
