TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Paul Smith tossed a pair of touchdowns to Garrett Mills, including a 66-yard game-winning strike in the fourth quarter, as Tulsa defeated Southern Methodist 20-13 Saturday.
Mills had eight receptions for 136 yards, pushing his season totals to 58 catches for 874 yards and seven touchdowns.
Tulsa (5-3, 4-1 Conference USA) broke a 13-13 tie with 8:24 to play. Smith scrambled out of the pocket, Mills' defender left him and the senior was 20 yards clear of the nearest pursuer when he hauled in Smith's pass. It was the longest touchdown reception of his career.
SMU (2-6, 1-4 CUSA) had three more possessions, but failed to threaten. Nelson Coleman sacked quarterback Jerad Romo on SMU's final drive to force a third-and-16. Romo's desperation pass on the next play was intercepted by Bobby Klinck.
Mills had given Tulsa a 10-7 lead in the second period on his 5-yard touchdown pass from Smith. He had four receptions for 51 yards in Tulsa's 61-yard scoring drive.
After Tulsa jumped out to a 3-0 lead, SMU came back on an 11-yard run by DeMyron Martin that capped a 71-yard drive and later added a pair of 23-yard field goals by Chris McMurtray.
Tulsa kicker Brad DeVault was successful on both of his attempts, from 36 and 24 yards. Smith completed 20 of 33 passes for 220 yards while Romo had nearly identical stats (20 of 32 for 223 yards).
SMU edged Tulsa in total yards with 337 to 323, but had three turnovers to none for the Hurricane.
SMU's best chance to take command came when it drove to a first-and-goal at the Tulsa 4 trailing 13-10 in the final quarter. On third down from the 2, William Washington threw Martin for a 4-yard loss and SMU settled for a field goal.
