DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Volleyball team defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 3-2 (30-24, 26-30, 30-23, 26-30, 15-12) on Tuesday at Moody Coliseum to kick off C-USA volleyball action for 2005. Freshman Natalie Peters had the game winning block for the Mustangs (5-5) in game No. 5 and set new SMU records for overall blocks and blocks in a five-game match with 12. Peters also hit .357 and tallied 13 kills for her first career double-double.
Caitlin Rainbird and Rachel Giubilato were also impressive for the Mustangs, as each recorded 20-20 games. Rainbird had 20 kills and 24 digs, to go along with three blocks, while Giubilato led the Mustangs in kills with 21 and added 25 digs and two service aces.
Senior Kelly Larkan just missed a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs, while also recording five blocks. Madison Hill set a new career-best with 67 assists and added 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Libero Jennette Evanco led SMU with 28 digs. SMU's 106 digs as a team ranked as the third-best total all-time.
The volleyball team returns to action this Friday and Saturday Sept. 16-17, at the Fullerton Invitational in Fullerton, Ca. The Mustangs will face Cal State-Fullerton, UC-Riverside and Loyola Marymount while out west.
