FULLERTON (SMU) - The SMU Volleyball team fell to UC-Riverside on Saturday evening 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-22) in the Hawthorn Suites Titan Invitational in Fullerton, Ca. The Mustangs (5-8) struggled to get things going in their second match of the day, hitting only .074 for the match. Rachel Giubilato led SMU with 11 kills and 12 digs for her third-straight double-double of the tournament. Freshman Natalie Peters was also strong throughout the invitational for SMU and tallied seven kills and three blocks against Riverside.
Caitlin Rainbird notched eight kills and eight digs for SMU and Kelly Larkan had three kills and nine digs. Freshman Stefanie Kons saw action at setter for most of the match and led the Mustangs in assists with 24. Jennette Evanco contributed 11 digs in the loss.
Riverside was helped by unforced errors from SMU in game three and closed out the sweep with a 30-22 win. Peters hit .400 with five kills on 10 swings and an error, while Larkan registered six digs in the final game.
SMU jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game two, but could not keep control of the game. Riverside fought back with a flurry of service aces to gain control and eventually got the best of the Mustangs 30-20.
Riverside took game one 30-25. The Mustangs hung tough throughout, but UCR gained momentum at the halfway point and was able to come away with the victory. Giubilato led SMU with six kills and Rainbird added five, hitting .300 for the game.
The SMU volleyball team returns to the court Friday, Sept. 23, when they host C-USA foe Central Florida at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum. The match will have live stats available via Gametracker and live video through Mustang All-Access on SMUMustangs.com.
