The SMU volleyball team fell to Texas Tech 3-0 (30-16, 30-26, 30-17) on Saturday in the championship match of the 2005 SMU Invitational held at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs (4-2) were led by Madison Hill's double-double of 21 assists and 10 digs. She was one of four SMU players with double digit digs.
Freshman Natalie Peters tallied 11 kills on the day, while Rachel Giubilato (10), Jennette Evanco (10) and Caitlin Rainbird (16) all finished with double digit digs. Senior Kelly Larkan had two service aces, to go along with five kills and seven digs. Giubilato also chipped in with seven kills.
Philister Sang of Texas Tech (3-2) received MVP honors for the tournament. Against SMU she tallied 20 kills, nine digs and hit .380 for the match. For SMU, Larkan and Rainbird were selected the all-tournament team and Evanco was named top libero.
The volleyball team returns to action at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., on Friday Sept. 9. The Mustangs will face Duke, Charlotte and Cornell at the tournament.
