DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team competed this past weekend at the Mean Green Invitational hosted by North Texas. In singles action, Pavi Francis wins Flight Green, Georgiana Marta finished second in Flight Black and Hillary Collins won Consolation bracket of Flight White. The freshman duo of Francis and Claire Rietsch took first place in doubles action.
On the first day, four Mustangs came out with wins. In Flight Green, Rietsch downed Kerryn Pottgeiter of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-2, while Francis defeated Lata Assudani of Sam Houston St., 7-6, 6-1. They both advanced to the semifinals where Rietsch toppled Irina Sotnikova of Sam Houston St., 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, and Francis overturned Maria Oprea (ASU), 6-4, 7-5. In Flight Black, Marta drove past Renee Branker (ASU), 6-2, 6-3 and Natasha Rudnouskaya took care of Kim Kennedy from Tyler, 6-1, 6-0. Both Mustangs advanced to the semifinals as Marta beat Sammie Moreton of North Texas, 6-2, ret., and Rudnouskaya defeated Ashley Longoria (SHSU), 6-1, 6-0. In the third flight (Flight White) on day one, Collins fell to Rome VanWyk (ASU), 6-0, 6-3, and Monica Neveklosova was unable to overcome Sofya Lifanova of UTA, 7-4, 6-2. In the Consolation Semifinals, Collins downed Maddie Srevily of Tyler, 6-1, 6-0, and Neveklovska routed Stacy Blair (UNT), 6-1, 6-1.
For day two in singles, Rietsch edged Monika Peciulionyte (UTA), 7-6, 6-1, in Flight Green while Francis defeated Daniela Novakova of UTA, 6-3, 6-4. In Flight Black, Marta battled Samantha Vanderdrift from Texas Tech, winning, 0-6, 7-6 (10-1). Rudnouskaya was not able to over turn the No. 1 seed from Texas Tech, Lae Ann Wagley as she fell, 6-1, 6-4. For Flight White in the Consolation Bracket, Collins defeated Sara Pesic from UTA in the quarterfinals and Neveklovska notched a win over Magely Rivera from Tyler.
In the Finals of singles play, Francis defeated fellow teammate Rietsch, 6-4, to win Flight Green. Marta fell to the No. 1 seed from Texas Tech, Lae Ann Wagley, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, for second place in Flight Black. Collins defeated fellow team-mate Neveklovska, 6-1, 6-1, for the Flight White Consolation Bracket win.
In doubles action, the tandem of Rudnosuskaya and Marta and then Francis and Rietsch all received first round byes. Neveklovska and Collins defeated a duo from NCTC, 9-7. On the second day, Francis and Rietsch dominated a team from Tyler, 8-0 and then defeated fellow teammates Neveklovska and Collins, 8-2. Rudnosuskaya and Marta fell to a Texas Tech tandem, 8-5. Day two, Francis and Rietsch downed Durham and Wagley from Texas Tech, 8-6, in the semifinals to take on a pair from Sam Houston St. in the finals. The Mustangs toppled to Bearkat duo, 9-7, for the doubles Championship.
The Mustangs head to the Rice Invitational, Oct. 6-8.
