DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team was unable to top No. 43 North Carolina St. this afternoon at the Northwood Club in Dallas as they fell, 5-2. The squad has faced a tough weekend, playing two ranked opponents in as many days. The Mustangs also had to rebound from a six hour grueling match that ended yesterday evening, having a short recovery time. The Mustangs are now 4-1 on the season and will face Texas St. tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs were unable to take the doubles-point as a team, but Natalia Bubien and Claire Reitsch notched a win at No. 1 over Alejandra Guerra and Daria Petrovic, 8-5. Jennifer Chay and Pavi Francis played at the No. 2 spot for the first time this season but were not able to power past Julia Roach and Kate Green, 8-5. Kristin Reid and Monica Neveklovska paired at No. 3 doubles as they fell to Berkeley Brock and Catherine Grotz, 8-4.
In singles action, Reid fell at No. 5 to Roach, 6-0, 6 -1 but Chay coasted to a win at No. 2 singles over Frotz, 6-2, 6-2, cutting the lead to one. Bubien battled with No. 43 Petrovic at No. 1 singles, but was not able to come out on top as she fell, 6-4, 6-1, and Neveklovska fell at No. 6 singles to Green, 6-4, 6-3. Francis fought hard with Guerra at No. 4, but was unable to top her as she fell, 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 10-4. Reitsch faced a long fight with Brock and maintained her pace for a, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, win.
The Mustangs will return to the court tomorrow for the third strait day with a match against Texas St. at the Garland Tennis Center with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
