DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (11-11, 3-5 C-USA) dropped their first match of the weekend in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-18) to the Memphis Tigers (13-9, 4-4 C-USA) on Friday night. Senior Natalie Peters led the Mustang offense recording 14 kills and a .478 hitting efficiency. Sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson led the defense and recorded her tenth double-double on the season with 12 digs and 13 kills. Senior Stefanie Kons had a team-high 22 assists.

After falling behind 10-16 in the fourth set, freshman Dana Powell served up an ace and Wilkerson followed with a kill as the Mustangs attempted to get back on track. The Tigers proved too much, and Peters ended the set and match recording the Mustangs' last offensive point while Memphis went on to the win.

The Mustangs started off strong in the third set led by the Wilkerson attack to lead the Tigers 9-5. Memphis rallied behind the block of Emily Underwood, the nation's number one blocker, pulling ahead 16-11. Memphis then served up two aces in a row and turned the corner, leaving SMU behind. The Memphis block successfully snuffed out the heated Mustang offense, which ended the set hitting .037.

The Tigers jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the second set, but Peters kept it close as she improved her offensive production with three kills. An ace by freshman setter Kelli Becerra tied the set at 13-13. Memphis answered with their own effective serving, recording subsequent aces and pulling ahead 18-15. The Tigers went on to win the set, despite the Mustangs recording a .316 hitting percentage.

In the first set, Peters went off on offense recording a .667 hitting percentage and going for seven out of nine kills to lead the Mustangs to victory. Peters ended the match with two blocks, bringing her two blocks closer to breaking SMU's all-time record for career total blocks.

The Mustangs will travel to UAB (16-3, 6-1 C-USA) on Sunday for match play at 1 p.m.
