BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (SMU)-SMU volleyball (11-12, 3-5 C-USA) dropped their final weekend road match on Sunday against top-ranked UAB (18-3, 8-1 C-USA) in three sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-16) at Bartow Arena. In the loss, Senior Natalie Peters recorded five block assists which moved her into first on SMU's career total blocks record list. Peters now has 447 total blocks and is only three assists away from taking the career block assists record. Peters already owns the record for solo blocks in a career.
Freshman Jessica Oliver stepped up for the Mustangs on offense recording eight kills and a .364 hitting percentage for the match. Playing in a 5-1 system, freshman setter Kelli Becerra registered a team-high 31 assists. On defense, sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson dug 13 attacks to lead the Mustangs, while freshman Sidney Stewart was right behind with 12. On top of Peters' five block assists, Becerra added three more.
The Mustangs played hard against a powerful UAB team, who ended the match hitting .365. UAB's Ivana Bozic was an offensive force recording 17 kills and a .417 hitting percentage to lead the Blazers. UAB also recorded 62 digs on defense to stop the Mustangs, averaging a little better than 20 digs a set.
SMU volleyball will continue on the road this Friday returning to match play against Marshall at 7 p.m. and then facing East Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m.
