DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (12-12, 4-6) swept the Marshall Thundering Herd (10-10, 3-7) in three sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center. Senior Natalie Peters acted like a true senior in tonight's match recording a stellar offensive performance with .625 hitting efficiency and 10 kills. On the other end, Freshman Dana Powell didn't quite act like a true freshman, matching Peters' 10 kills and hitting .391.
In the 5-1, freshman Kelli Becerra put up a season- and career-high 33 assists and served up a career and season-high four aces. Several Mustangs benefited from Becerra's exceptional night, with junior Kendra Kahanek going for seven kills and a .417 hitting percentage, while sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson and freshman Jessica Oliver each collected six kills.
On the defensive end, Peters continues to dominate at the net registering six block assists, which puts her at 374 for the year and she now owns the record for career block assists. Powell contributed four block assists as well, and one solo. Freshman libero Sidney Stewart helped out with 15 digs.
The Mustangs ended the night with a .381 hitting percentage, which registered as a season-high and a fourth place team match record at SMU.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday against East Carolina (11-14, 1-9 C-USA) at 12:00 p.m. The Pirates are currently entertaining a 10-match losing streak.
