DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (13-13, 5-7 C-USA) took down the Houston Cougars (14-11, 6-6 C-USA) Friday night in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21) in Moody Coliseum. In the win, the Great Wall of SMU Volleyball was in full effect setting an SMU match record 20 blocks in four sets. Senior Natalie Peters registered seven total blocks, while junior Kendra Kahanek recorded five, accounting for over half of the team blocks.
In the fourth set, a Peters and freshman Jessica Oliver stuff block pulled SMU ahead 9-5. Houston worked their way back into the set, reeling off four points in a row to tie it up 12-12. Houston grabbed the lead off several Cougar kills, but the Mustangs did not let down, tying it up 21-21 with another stuff block by Peters and senior Stefanie Kons. SMU put the match away off a kill by freshman Dana Powell.
It quickly became the Wilkerson show in the third set, with sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson putting away a kill to give SMU the lead. Wilkerson went on to hit .556 for the set and recorded five kills. The Mustangs never looked back prevailing in the third and ending with a .324 hitting percentage.
The Cougars and Mustangs were neck and neck through the eighth point in the second set, until Houston took the lead 12-9 off a couple Mustang errors. Houston's offense expanded the lead, 19-13, after tooling the Mustang block. Five Mustang blocks in a row later, SMU tied it up 19 all. Trailing by one till the end, SMU finally relinquished the set to the Cougars.
In the first set, SMU busted out three stuff blocks to storm ahead 7-4 and force a Houston time-out. A Powell kill brought the score to 15-11. Powell ended the set hitting .417 and recording six kills. Scrappy defense kept the ball alive on the SMU side and resulted in a point, 18-14. A Cougar tip kill by Kelsey King brought Houston within two, but the Cougars relented, giving the set away on an attack error.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday against Rice (17-5, 8-3 C-USA) at 1 p.m. in the Dig Pink match at Moody Coliseum.
