COLUMBIA, MO -- The SMU women's tennis team concluded play at the Mizzou Ace For the Cure Invitational Sunday at the Green Tennis Center. After a tough start to the tournament, the Mustangs were victorious in three of their finals matches.
Junior Sarah Acosta (Corpus Christi, TX) paced the team with a 6-3, 6-2) victory over Louisville's Gabrielle Duncan in her final match of the C singles consolation draw. Earlier in the day, Acosta teamed with Missouri's Maureen Modesto to win the C doubles consolation draw with an 8-5 victory over Duncan and her teammate Amelia Harris.
In other doubles action, Junior Nicole Briceno (Pembroke Pines, FL) and Junior Sophie Quist (Sydney, Australia) captured the A draw consolation title with a clutch tiebreak win over Missouri's #1 doubles team, Jamie Mera and Mallory Weber. The match was played in front of a very partisan Missouri home crowd, included several lead changes, and was closely contested, as neither team enjoyed more than a one game advantage the entire match.
"After a tough start on Friday, we showed a lot of character by bouncing right back and finishing strong," said assistant coach Patrick Sullivan. "I'm proud of our team - especially Sarah, who showed a lot of versatility by pairing up with a player she had never met before Friday and winning the back draw. I would also like to commend Missouri coach Blake Starkey and all of his support staff, for putting together such a well-run tournament for a very worthy cause and our whole team would like to thank Randy and Cortney Wright and their children Brianne and Ellie for being such a gracious and accommodating host family."
The Mustangs return to action Oct. 17 in Houston as play begins in the 28th Annual Rice Classic.
