MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU)-SMU volleyball (14-17, 6-11 C-USA) ended the 2008-09 season in the C-USA tournament on Thursday with a loss to UCF (15-16, 7-10 C-USA) at the Elma Roane Field House in Memphis, Tenn. Despite their efforts, SMU could not contain the Golden Knight attack which saw senior all-conference hitter Stephanie Serna record 18 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Junior Mustang Kendra Kahanek had a solid offensive match with 10 kills, hitting .500.

SMU fell behind early in the fourth set 2-7, as UCF's Serna went on the attack. An ace from Golden Knight Janine Williams sent the Mustangs to the bench for a time out at 12-7. Powell answered with an ace of her own, pulling SMU within three. Refusing to relent, the Mustangs worked their way to a tie at 23-23. UCF did not give in, earning the set and match-win.

UCF outside hitter Janine Williams split the SMU block for a kill in the third set, pulling the Golden Knights in front 10-7 which issued a call for a Mustang time out. SMU turned the set around and recorded two stuff blocks for a 16-13 lead. UCF pushed for the comeback, tying it up three times until they finally prevailed for the win off SMU errors.

Subsequent kills by freshman Dana Powell and senio Natalie Peters had the Mustangs up 8-4 in the second set. After a UCF time out, SMU came out with the momentum, burying kill shots. Kahanek slammed an assist by freshman Kelli Becerra on the middle attack to put SMU up 15-10. Junior Carly Bergquist dug up a Golden Knight power shot, allowing Powell to earn the point with a kill at 19-14. SMU evened up the match with a set win. The Mustang offense was productive in the win, earning a team hitting percentage of .371.

Early in the first set, senior Stefanie Kons used an elusive tip kill to grab the lead at 7-4. SMU's offense began to click when Peters recorded back to back kills that forced UCF to take a timeout at 10-6. UCF's regrouping efforts appeared to work as they pulled ahead 15-14 after the Mustangs committed attack and ball-handling errors causing Seifert to call her own huddle. SMU was unable to recuperate and relinquished the set on an attack error.
