Dallas (SMU)-SMU Volleyball (9-7, 2-1 C-USA) prevailed over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (10-6, 0-3) in four sets (30-28, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20) on Sunday, September 28 at Moody Coliseum. This win concludes a successful conference weekend for the Mustangs. Sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson continued her exceptional all-around effort as she collected team highs on offense and defense with 14 kills and 19 digs. Freshman Kelli Becerra recorded a team-high 31 assists in the win.
Wilkerson was stellar in the fourth set, leading the offense with eight kills and a .800 hitting percentage. Freshman Dana Powell also contributed five kills and an intensified effort to help the Mustangs secure the win.
Behind an ambitious offensive attack led by Senior Ashley Petrinec, the Golden Eagles were able to fend off a three-set sweep in the third set. Powell and Senior Natalie Peters each had three kills, while Peters also recorded an ace.
SMU started out and ended tough in the second set. Southern Miss was forced to call a time out at 20-16 due to four Mustangs hitting over.500. Peters led with four kills and had 1.5 blocks. She is now 14 blocks away from taking over the top spot at SMU for Career Blocks with 430.
The Mustangs put on a defensive display recording 31 digs as the Golden Eagles struggled to stay alive in the first set. An exciting litany of kills from both teams ensued, including a devious tip-kill from Junior Stefanie Kons which gave SMU the lead at 27-26. SMU went on to win the set 30-28
SMU volleyball will continue conference play next weekend on the road as they travel to Houston, Texas where they will face Rice (9-3, 1-1) on Friday Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Fogelman Arena and Houston (7-7, 0-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
