DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU Volleyball placed third in the SMU Radisson Invite after Saturday's 3:30 p.m. loss to Stephen F. Austin in a hard-fought five-set match (16-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13) at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs recorded a monstrous defensive effort with 91 digs and six blocks. En route to their third place finish, sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson and freshman Dana Powell garnered All-Tournament accolades.
Powell put forth a strong offensive effort in the fifth set registering three points off of kills and hitting a .375 though it was not enough to pull the Mustangs to victory. Wilkerson stood out as well, earning three kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs battled it out with the Lumberjacks in a fourth set loss that showcased senior Natalie Peters' ability to put up an effective block. Peters is closing in on the top spot for total blocks in a career with 402. She only needs 41 more to become number one. Peters also came alive on the offense recording a .571 hitting percentage.
SMU improved their defense significantly (28 digs) in their third set loss in an attempt contain a high-powered Lumberjack offense (.298 team hitting percentage). Individually, Sidney Stewart stepped up and recorded double-digit digs with 11.
Early in the second set, the Mustangs trailed but were able to overcome a five-point deficit with intense team defense (18 digs) and an inspiring Kahanek offense (.444 hitting percentage). A successful block from Powell gave SMU a 21-18 lead and the Mustangs went on to win the set.
On her way to becoming an All-Tournament selection, Wilkerson helped the Mustangs get out to an easy lead in the first set by accounting for three consecutive points with kills and finished the set with a .556 hitting percentage. She then joined with teammate Peters to stuff block a Lumberjack attack pulling to 19-13. The Mustangs polished off the set 25-16.
The Mustangs (4-3) return to action next Friday, September 12, at the Ole Miss Invite in Oxford, Mississippi taking on Georgia Tech at 10:00 a.m. followed by Eastern Illinois at 4:00 p.m. and finishing up against Ole Miss on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Complex.
