DALLAS (SMU) - Mouhammad Faye and Paul McCoy each scored 18 points as the SMU Mustangs defeated Florida Gulf Coast 79-62 at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. Justin Haynes added a career-high 17 points for SMU.
The Mustangs shot 60 percent in the second half on 15-of-25 from the field as they outscored Florida Gulf Coast 48-31 after halftime. The game was tied 31-31 at intermission.
The Mustangs (1-2) outrebounded Florida Gulf Coast 44-23, including a 20-6 advantage on the offensive boards. Papa Dia and McCoy each had a game-high eight rebounds. For McCoy, it was a career-high.
Both teams shot just above 43-percent from the field, with SMU dropping 43.6-percent to FGCU's 43.1-percent. The Mustangs were 25-of-37 from the free throw line, while the Eagles (0-3) were just 11-of-14 on free throws.
The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum on Monday when they host Huston-Tillotson at 7 p.m.
