EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Stefon Jackson scored 28 points and made seven of his team's last 10 points to lead UTEP to a 61-58 overtime victory over SMU on Wednesday night. SMU's Derek Williams missed a tying 3-pointer at end of regulation.
With the game tied 51-51, Jackson scored four points in a row and missed a 3-pointer with one second remaining that would have won the game in regulation.
The Miners (17-10, 8-5 Conference USA) took a 61-56 lead midway through the overtime period with a layup by Tavaris Watts and a 30-foot shot clock beating 3-pointer by Jackson that went in off the glass. Watts scored 14 points off the bench and had nine rebounds for UTEP. Arnett Moultrie contributed 10 rebounds.
SMU (8-18, 2-11) scored three points in overtime that included a jumper by Paul McCoy and a free throw by Mike Walker. Derek Williams led the Mustangs with 13 points and Bamba Fall scored 12. The Mustang's Mouhammad Faye led all rebounders by grabbing a career-best 15 boards.
SMU outrebounded UTEP 53-44, recording the highest rebound total for SMU in a Conference USA contest. In addition to Faye's 15, Bamba Fall grabbed eight boards and tied Wilbur Marsh for 24th in SMU history at 550 career boards.
Robert Nyakundi scored nine points and hit 3-of-4 from 3-point range for SMU before fouling out with 7:04 left in regulation. Nyakundi also had seven rebounds, a block, an assist and a steal.
SMU led 30-20 at the half and 43-28 after a Mike Walker 3-pointer with 13:29 left in regulation.
The Mustangs have two straight at home with Tulsa coming to Moody Coliseum on Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Southern Miss visiting for the home finale next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Southern Miss game is senior night for SMU's Bamba Fall.
