AUBURN, Ala. (SMU) - The SMU equestrian team dropped its season opener to Auburn, 7-4, Friday at the Auburn Horse Unit. Maia Van Dyke won MVP honors for her performance in equitation on the flat, scoring an 86.

SMU got out to a quick start, defeating the Tigers 3-2 in the flat event. Aside from Van Dyke, Kristen Collins and Jennifer Weeks also tallied victories for the Mustangs in the event.

Despite dropping the equitation over fences event, 5-1, SMU came away with a higher total in raw points for the two events, owning an 847-728 advantage. In the fences, the Mustangs fell short by just 19 points in the raw score, 457-438.

SMU will return to action on Sunday as it faces off against defending overall national champion Georgia. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
