TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (SMU) - Dana Powell notched 11 kills, Kathryn Wilkerson added nine, and the duo combined for 13 kills and three blocks, but the effort wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell to Alabama in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-22).
The Mustangs (3-3) fought desperately to get back in the match after the Crimson Tide went on a 9-2 run to open the third set. The clawed their way back into the set, cutting the lead to three, 22-19, but that was as close at they got, falling 25-22.
Down a set to the host school, the Mustangs looked poised to even the match 1-1 leading the second set 15-14, but the Crimson Tide went on an 11-5 run to close out the set, and take a commanding two sets to none lead over the Mustangs.
Alabama made a statement during their first set in their home tournament, opening the set with a 10-5 run. The Mustangs cut the lead to 12-10, but could only manage to score seven more points as the host team went on to take the first set 25-17.
Kelli Becerra recorded 29 assists and seven digs, while Sidney Stewart posted 13 digs. Alabama held the Mustangs to a .188 hitting percentage, while the Crimson Tide blasted a .333 average.
The Mustangs will close out the Bama Bash against McNeese State Saturday at 2 p.m.
