DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Equestrian team battled from a 5-1 deficit to come back and defeat UT-Martin, Sunday afternoon at BuckBranch Farm in Wilmer.
Coming into the Equitation on the Flat event, the Mustangs trailed 4-1 before dropping the first point of the flat when Morgan Toal went off course to go down 5-1. However SMU did not give up, winning the next five points to prevail. Of SMU's five victories in the final event, four came by a margin of at least nine points. Even though she went off course, Toal earned MVP honors in the event due to her performance prior to her misstep. Toal was in line to receive the highest score of any rider before her horse went over the boundary.
The win gave SMU a split on the weekend after falling 6-5 to Baylor on Saturday in Waco. Claire Wenholz turned in a spectacular performance winning an impressive 88-87 match in Equitation on the Flat. In the fences, SMU tied 3-3, and had four of its six riders score an 80 or better. Lindsay Strafuss and newcomer Katie Jones each scored an 82 to lead the way for the visitors.
The team will return to action on Friday at 10 a.m. in Wilmer as the Texas A&M Aggies come to town.
