LAFAYETTE, La. (SMU) - The No. 40 SMU men's golf team continued its strong start to the spring as the squad finished tied for second place at 3-under par at the 27th Annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club. The finish was the Mustangs highest of the season, topping a third place result in the fall at the David Toms Intercollegiate.
"We keep shooting under par rounds and getting in contention which is huge for our confidence," said SMU head coach Josh Gregory. "We didn't finish our best today, but to get a second place finish out of it is very encouraging."
Once again, it was the Mustangs balance that proved to be the difference, as all five golfers placed inside the top 40, with Sam Fidone and Max Buckley landing in the top 20. At even par, Fidone finished tied for 14th, while Buckley was one stroke behind in a tie at 17th. Marc Sambol, Harry Higgs and Matt Schovee all finished tied for 37th at 4-over par.
"It was great to have all five guys finish in the top four," Gregory said. "We have really improved our play in the fourth and fifth spot, and Matt and Sam are the reasons we are becoming a very good team. We don't have a No. 1 or a No. 5, we have five solid players that are all capable of shooting under par on any day. I'm very proud of these guys—from where we started in the fall to where we are now is remarkable."
After topping ranked foes in their previous tournaments, this week's tournament saw the Mustangs score lower that eight teams in the top 100, including No. 22 Kent State, No. 26 Illinois, No. 46 Memphis while tying No. 51 Tulsa.
SMU will be in San Diego, Calif., next week to compete in the Farms Collegiate Invitational on March 12-13.
