Mustangs Top Defending National Champion Baylor In Exhibition

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU equestrian team defeated Hunter Seat defending National Champion Baylor in an exhibition meet Saturday morning at BuckBranch Farm. The Mustangs and Bears tied 6-6, but SMU won the raw score tie breaker, 962-818.

"Today was a great chance for our young team to get experience against Baylor, the defending national champion in Hunter Seat," head coach Haley Schoolfield said. "Our team performed very well, and today showed us areas where we still need to improve before we play Delaware State. I'm extremely excited about the year, our talent and our progress we made in the offseason."

The teams split the flat 3-3, with SMU taking the raw score 482-408. Paulena Johnson earned a point with her 86-83 defeat of Tara Funk. Sophomore Greer Hindle scored for the Mustangs with a 76-0 win over Emily Kinney. Sophomore Ryan Umberger also picked up a point with her victory over Bailey Hughes, 82-80.

Equitation over fences was also split 3-3, and the Mustangs again had the raw-score advantage, 480-410. Freshman Alex Butterworth's 85-80 win over Alexis Humenik scored a point for the Mustangs. Sophomores Rachel Reid and Kendall Skreden also had key victories of 85-75 and 85-0, respectively.

SMU opens the season on Sept. 20 when the team hosts Delaware State at BuckBranch Farm.
