DALLAS (SMU) - Cailin Bula finished with a match-high 12 kills and Caroline Young finished with 10 to lead the Mustangs to a sweep of UCF in the Dedman Center Sunday (25-19, 25-15, 25-21). With the win, SMU improved to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Knights fell to 13-7, 4-3 in the American.

While the offense was stellar, it was the defense which carries the Mustangs against the Knights. SMU posted 10 blocks, with Caroline Daly recording five with two solo blocks in her first start of the season. Morgan Heise had 15 of SMU's 48 digs, and was one of four Mustangs with at least seven.

The Mustangs completed the sweep in the third, holding off a charge by the Knights. SMU took an early 8-3 lead, but UCF rallied to tie the score, 10-10. Later in the set, SMU held a one-point lead, 19-18, and the Mustangs scored four straight to take a 23-18 lead. After her attack went out on SMU's first match-point attempt, Bula blasted her 12th kill of the match to give the Mustangs the win with a 25-21 victory in the third set.

Heise had nine digs in the first set, and SMU hit .447 with 17 kills and zero errors to take a 25-19 win in the first set. Abbey Bybel led the offensive onslaught with five kills. UCF scored four of the first five points, but the Mustangs scored five straight to take a 10-7 lead. SMU stretched the lead to six, 14-8, on a pair of aces by Heise. UCF cut the lead to three, and kept the deficit at three, 19-16, but SMU scored six of the last nine points to end the set with Young scoring her first two kills of the match on SMU's last two points.

SMU held the Knights to just five kills in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win. The Knights scored the first point, but SMU scored the next seven for a six-point lead. UCF scored the next three to cut the lead to 7-4, but that was as close as the Knights got the rest of the set. The Mustangs went on a 10-3 run to push the lead to 10, 20-10, and scored five of the last seven points for the win. Bula had six kills in the set, and Carla Armstrong recorded six digs.

The Mustangs continue the homestand Friday against Houston at 7 p.m. The Cougars are the only conference team SMU has yet to play.
