Mustangs Edged in Second Round of National Championships

April 19, 2013

WACO, Texas (SMU) - The SMU equestrian team was defeated by No. 3 Georgia, 6-2, on Friday, ending the Mustangs' season in the second round of the National Collegiate Equestrian Championship on Friday at the Extraco Events Center.

"Our athletes rode very well today and the flat group improved their flat scores from yesterday," said head coach Haley Schoolfield. "It just wasn't quite enough against a tough UGA squad. Congratulations to Emma Roberts and Schaefer Raposa for wins on both days of the tournament. We look forward to building on this experience and a great 2013-2014 season."

The Mustangs began the competition by splitting with Georgia in equitation over fences, 2-2. Roberts had a great ride and defeated Sarah Milliren 164-153 to earn a Mustang point. Rookie Raposa also had an impressive ride and outscored her opponent, Abby O'Mara, 173-149. Alex Butterworth and Courtney Line were both edged by Georgia riders 175-154 and 169-160 respectively.

SMU had a tough day on the flat and lost all four matchups. Line stepped in and rode on the flat after her fences competition and lost by a mere four points (156-152). Paulena Johnson, Julianna Fischer, and Mary Abbruzzese also represented the Mustangs in the flat competition.
