TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - Caroline Young posted her fourth double-double of the season, but Tulsa defeated SMU 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-14) in the Reynolds Center Wednesday night. Young scored 10 kills with 10 digs, playing three sets in the front row for the first time since suffering an ankle injury at Memphis on Oct. 5. With the loss, SMU falls to 15-4, 4-3 in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulsa improved to 11-7, 3-4 in The American.
Tulsa ended the match in the fourth set, winning 25-14 for the victory. The Golden Hurricane took a 6-1 lead to start the set, and SMU wasn't able to erase the deficit. Tulsa scored 13 kills in the set, holding SMU to 11, including three by Abbey Bybel, who finished with a team-high 15 kills.
Kristen Stehling scored 14 kills, giving SMU three players in double digits. Avery Acker recorded 47 assists and 15 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Morgan Heise led SMU with 18 digs, but Tulsa had a pair of players with 19 digs each, posting 80 as a team.
SMU took a 7-6 lead in the third set and didn't trail again, taking a 25-19 victory to cut Tulsa's lead in the match to 2-1. With a 12-11 lead, the Mustangs went on an 8-3 run, extending the lead to six, 20-14. Tulsa scored the next three points to get within three, 20-17, but never got any closer. Young and Stehling each had five kills to lead SMU, and the Mustangs held Tulsa to six kills.
The Mustangs rallied back into the first set, but a late run by Tulsa gave the Golden Hurricane a 25-18 victory. Tulsa scored the first seven points, but SMU came all the way back, tying the score 12-12. The scored was still tied, 17-17, but Tulsa went on an 8-1 run to close the set, recording three blocks during the run. Bybel paced the SMU offense with five kills, but the Mustangs had just nine total, hitting .068. Tulsa scored 15 kills, and had 25 digs to SMU's 12.
The Golden Hurricane held off another late charge by the Mustangs to win the second set 25-23. Trailing 20-13, SMU scored five straight to cut the lead to two, 20-18, and got to within one twice, 23-22 and 24-23. Each time, Tulsa won the next point to keep the Mustangs from tying the score, holding on for the win. SMU finished with 22 digs as a team, and scored 15 kills to Tulsa's 14, but the Mustangs committed nine attack errors in the set.
The Mustangs return home to host East Carolina Sunday in Moody Coliseum at 1 p.m. The match precedes four straight road contests for SMU.
