TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Dane Evans threw for five touchdowns to lead Tulsa in a 38-28 victory over SMU, surviving a fourth quarter combeback by the Mustangs.
Evans threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Keyarris Garrett to put Tulsa up 7-6 in the first quarter, and the Hurricane's went on to lead by as many as 22 points, 35-13, with just over 5 minutes to play in the third.
Garrett finished with 96-yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Zack Langer added 167 yards on the ground for Tulsa (2-7, 2/3 American).
Matt Davis had two short TD runs to close SMU's deficit to seven in the fourth quarter.
Davis threw for 212 yards and one touchdown, and ran for another 181 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs (0-8, 0-4). On the day, Davis recorded 393 yards of total offense with 3 TDs (2 rush, 1 pass). The day tied Davis for 12th in SMU history for total yards in a game and the most since former Mustang quarterback Garrett Gilbert had 403 total yards of offense at Cincinnati on Nov. 9, 2013.
SMU returns home to take on USF next Saturday, Nov. 15 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 PM CT and tickets can be purchased online at smumustangs.com/tickets. The game is part of Homecoming 2014 festivities.
