SAN FRANCISCO (SMU) - The Mustangs (1-1)won three straight sets to take a 4-1 victory over Georgia (1-1) in the second match of the San Francisco Invite Saturday morning. Caroline Young led three Mustangs in double digits with a match-high 12 kills. The senior also had six aces in the match.
Abbey Bybel scored 11 kills and finished with nine digs, while Janelle Giordano posted 11 kills with four blocks. Freshman Lauren Mills scored eight kills, and Morgan Heise was two digs from matching her career-high, recording 22 in the match. Avery Acker scored her second double-double of the season with 43 assists and 10 digs. She also match Kristen Stehling with a team-high five blocks.
After Georgia posted eight blocks in the first set, the Bulldogs finished with 12, while the Mustangs had 10 in the match, scoring just one in the first set. SMU finished with 51 digs to Georgia's 41. The Mustangs scored 50 kills while holding Georgia to 36.
With the match tied 1-1, SMU cruised to a 25-16 win in the 3rd set for a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs posted four blocks, the most of any set to date, and got four kills each from Bybel and freshman Lauren Mills. SMU held Georgia to a -.065 attack percentage while hitting .212 with 14 kills. The Mustangs scored 10 of the first 15 points, and led by as many as 11 in the set.
The Mustangs closed out the win with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set. Georgia held a slim advantage early in the set, but a 5-1 run gave SMU an 11-9 lead. A few points later, the Mustangs went on a 10-3 run for a 22-14 lead.
The Mustangs fought off two set-point attempts, but Georgia held on to take the first set 25-22. The Bulldogs built an early four-point lead, 10-6, but the Mustangs rallied all the back to tie the score, 18-18. After the two teams traded a point, Georgia scored three straight for a 22-19 lead. SMU had more digs that the Bulldogs, 14-11, but Georgia posted eight blocks in the opening set.
SMU took the second set 25-18 to even the match 1-1. Young scored four straight aces to stretch the SMU lead to 17-11. Georgia rallied to get within one, 17-16, but after a service error by the Bulldogs, the Mustangs pushed the lead to four, 20-16. Georgia never got within three points the rest of the set. SMU scored eight aces in the set overall.
The Mustangs play their final match in San Francisco against Fordham Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT.
