MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team had solid defense and goalkeeping in the loss against American Athletic Conference opponent Memphis on Sunday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The defense cleared shot attempt after shot attempt and goalkeeper Shannon Moroney made five saves in the 2-0 defeat at Memphis (7-3-2, 2-0-1).
"We hung in there for a long time," head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "We gave up two goals and it's hard to win a game when you give up two goals."
The Mustangs' (4-6-3, 1-2-1) first chance to score in the second half came in the 56th minute when Vanessa Valadez made a run down the right side with pace. The forward cut back toward the box and took a shot that went just wide of the net.
SMU had several more chances in the Tigers' box, but were not able to come away with a shot on goal.
Petrucelli said that the offense did not have enough chances going forward and it cost them.
"On the other end, we weren't very dangerous going forward," Petrucelli said. "You can't win if you don't score."
Memphis scored twice late in the second half. In the 81st minute, the Tigers' Emily Adamic took a touch in the box and lifted it over Moroney's outstretched arms for the first goal of the match. Adamic scored again two minutes later when her shot took a deflection through traffic and into the net.
SMU will return home to face Houston on Friday at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. The Mustangs defeated Houston in last year's matchup, 3-2.
"It looks like they've been playing really competitively," Petrucelli said. "It will be a tough game."
