DALLAS (SMU) - Stephanie Collins tied an SMU record with six blocks, and four Mustangs scored at least 10 points, but the effort was not enough as SMU fell, 64-57, to No. 18 Arizona State Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. The sophomore forward from Melbourne, Australia, joined Sarah Davis and Kendall Shead, who each had six blocks March 3, 2006, against Tulane.

The Mustangs (1-2) scored five straight in the fourth quarter, cutting the Sun Devil lead to two, 48-46. Arizona State (1-1) responded with six unanswered, pushing the lead to 10, 56-46. SMU held the Sun Devils scoreless for the next minute, while making both free throws in three trips to the free throw line, to pull within four, 56-52, with 2:47 remaining in the game. Arizona State out-scored the Mustangs 8-5 down the stretch to hold on for its first win of the season after an overtime loss to then-No. 18 Kentucky.

McKenzie Adams led the Mustangs with 16 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Morgan Bolton and Alicia Froling each finished with 12, with Froling scoring at least 10 points in each of the first three games. Senior Gabrielle Wilkins scored 11 points, giving SMU four players in double figures for the third consecutive game.

SMU shot 90 percent from the free throw line, 18-of-20, while shooting 33 percent from the field, 18-of-54. Arizona State made 22-of-58 field goals, 37.9 percent, but made 8-of-23 from behind the arc to give the Sun Devils the advantage on the scoreboard.

At the end of the third quarter, after bouncing between two ties, SMU outscored ASU 15-14, cutting the deficit to three, 40-37. Froling led the Mustangs in the quarter, recording six points and three rebounds. Adams led the Mustangs into the break with nine points, shooting 50 percent from outside the 3-point arc. Wilkins scored seven in the first 20 minutes, but it was the Sun Devils with the lead at the break, 27-22. The Mustangs outscored the Sun Devils in the second quarter, 13-12, and finished the half shooting 93 percent from the free throw line.

The Mustangs continue their season-opening homestand Friday, Nov. 27, at 5:30 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton at the SMU-hosted Thanksgiving Classic in Moody Coliseum.
