LAS VEGAS, Nev. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs men's golf team improved by 12 strokes over yesterday, carding a team score of 287 in the second round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Tuesday. SMU was one of just six schools to shoot under par in the round, propellingthe Mustangs up two spots on the leaderboard to sit in a tie for 12th with Georgia heading into the final round.

After starting on the 10th hole, SMU had a strong back nine, with the four counting scorers shooting 8-under on holes 1-9.

Juniors Austin Smotherman and Ryan Burgess led the way, with both carding 3-under 33's on the back nine. Smotherman shot a 2-under 70 for the day, while Burgess posted a 71. Both players tallied three birdies on the back nine.

Fellow junior Bryson Dechambeau also had three birdies on the back nine, ending the day with a 1-over 73. Freshman Ben Baxter matched DeChambeau's score, carding 17 pars on the day, with his lone bogey on the tough par-5 18th hole. Sophomore Andrew Buchanan eagled the par-5 13th hole, but also recorded five holes at bogey or worse to settle for a 3-over 75 on his scorecard.

Smotherman is SMU highest-ranking player in the field at 2-under for the event, putting him in a tie for 16th individually. No. 22 Oklahoma State leads the tournament, with No. 7 Texas just two shots off the lead. UNLV's Redford Bobbitt and Alabama's Robby Shelton share the individual lead at 8-under par.

SMU will tee off on hole 10 starting at 11:20 a.m. CT/9:20 a.m. PT tomorrow, grouped with Texas A&M and TCU.
